Pet Heat Safety
Summer is here, and with it, comes the high temperatures that can be dangerous for your dog. While we love treating our pup to a day at the park, a hike, or other outdoor activities, it is essential to keep them safe and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.
Here are some quick tips to help keep your pet cool during the summer:
Throw some shade
If you are outside, try to find a shady area that will give your dog a break from the sun. If shade isn’t available, bring some with you. Portable canopies, sun shades, and patio umbrellas are all great choices to keep your pet cool this summer.
Even having a sheet or blanket to hang between trees as a makeshift shade can go a long way in ensuring your dog is safe this summer.
Stick to the grass
In extreme summer heat, our dogs’ paws are not meant to walk for a long distance on paved concrete or blacktop. Our canine friends did not evolve to spend time on these unnatural surfaces and it’s necessary to protect them from the pavement’s heat. On hot days, do your best to limit their exposure to heat absorbing surfaces.
If you must walk on pavement, consider buying some pet booties.
Keep it cool
Whether you’re in your house or car, try to make sure the air is flowing and your dog has a way to keep cool. Also, offering your pooch a nice wet towel or blanket after walks can help too.
If your dog experiences any cracking on their paws you can repair the damage with our Pet Wants healing salve. As always, make sure your dog is well hydrated, and if you think they are experiencing heat exhaustion, make sure to take them to your vet as soon as possible.
Stay cool out there!
